In January, students at Greens Farms Elementary School (GFS) came together for a powerful service learning initiative led by the school’s student leadership group, the Long Neck Leaders (LNLs). With the support of a donation from the GFS PTA to Blankets of Hope, the entire GFS community participated in spreading warmth, kindness, and encouragement to individuals and families in need.

As part of the project, every GFS student wrote a personalized, handwritten note of encouragement. Each note was attached to a new blanket, transforming a simple donation into a meaningful message of hope. In total, 125 blankets were prepared and distributed to local shelters, including the Center for Family Justice in Bridgeport, Homes for Hope in Bridgeport, and a shelter in Wolcott, Connecticut.

The initiative was facilitated by Ellen Hardy, GFS Orchestra Teacher, and Chris Chieppo, GFS Grade 1 Teacher, who support the Long Neck Leaders and guide students in meaningful, student-driven leadership experiences. LNL students took on an active role in planning and leading the project, facilitating the work over two separate afternoons and promoting the initiative through the GFS Patches Productions morning show.

“This service learning project was incredibly moving and meaningful for our entire school community,” said Brian Byrne, principal of Greens Farms Elementary School. “It gave our Long Neck Leaders real agency, allowing them to lead, facilitate, and inspire others through their actions and their voices. Seeing our scholars take ownership of a project that made such a positive impact was something we are all proud of. Their work reflects the values of global citizenship and shows how even small acts of kindness can create a positive impact in the community.”

The school also expressed gratitude to the GFS PTA for its generous donation to Blankets of Hope, which made it possible to provide such a large number of blankets to local shelters.

Through this initiative, Greens Farms Elementary students demonstrated empathy, leadership, and a strong commitment to service, values that continue to shape them as learners, leaders, and compassionate members of the broader community.
