Grade 4 and Grade 5 scholars at Greens Farms School (GFS) recently welcomed Newbery Honor-winning author Jasmine Warga for an inspiring day of learning and creativity. Warga, best known for Other Words for Home, A Rover’s Story, and The Shape of Thunder, shared her journey as a writer and discussed the power of empathy, imagination, and perseverance, key themes that deeply resonate with upper elementary readers. Scholars were captivated as Warga spoke about her background, her writing process and how real-life experiences shape the stories she tells.
During the visit, GFS Librarian, Karen Prespa, facilitated a special lunchtime writing session where a small group of scholars collaborated with Warga on their own creative pieces. The young writers were eager to share ideas, ask thoughtful questions and explore the art of storytelling alongside a published author. Principal Brian Byrne praised the experience as “a remarkable opportunity for scholars to connect their classroom learning to real-world inspiration.” The event reflected the ongoing commitment to experiential learning and fostering a lifelong love of reading and writing at GFS as well as the school goal of, creating joyful learning opportunities to help everyone achieve their full potential.
